The Prime Minister of the Republic of Melonia (more commonly known as simply the “Prime Minister”) is the head of the Executive Branch of the Republic of Melonia. The Prime Minister decides who to appoint for all Cabinet positions and generally leads the execution of the day-to-day functions of the Melonian government.

The Prime Minister role, back when it was titled Vice Mayor of the City of Melonia, had less power than it does now. However, the Vice Mayor was the President of the Senate (today's equivalent would be Parliament), and the Prime Minister of today does not lead Parliament officially¹⁾.

The Prime Minister position started off as the Vice Mayor of the City of Melonia. When Melonia was founded on May 30, 2022, the founders of Melonia decided to establish a city-state government, with an elected Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Senate. The Vice Mayor of the City of Melonia did not have much executive power, as the Mayor held those powers instead, but would be able to step in for the Mayor in times where the Mayor was unavailable during an emergency, and the Vice Mayor led the Senate, holding a crucial tie-breaker vote.

When the new Republic of Melonia government was being drafted, the writers of the new Constitution decided to change Melonia into a semi-presidential constitutional republic rather than a city-state. This meant that the powers of the Executive Branch became split between the President and the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister now has the power to appoint Cabinet members and generally executes the day-to-day functions of the government. The Prime Minister no longer has the power of presiding over Parliament, however, and can be fired by Parliament with a simple majority vote.

The Prime Minister acts as the head of the executive branch/chief executive. This means that the Prime Minister has the duty of conducting the day-to-day business of the Melonian government, and making executive decisions on various items.

The Prime Minister, under this directive, is also responsible for appointing all Cabinet members (who must be approved by the President and Parliament). The President holds the ability to sign or veto laws, however.
