On February 8, 2023, Prime Minister tz_scion was wounded by former Member of Parliament SNHK. tz_scion was participating in a debate for Speaker of Parliament against Speaker lainuel when SNHK broke through the walls of the House of the Republic and started battering tz_scion with a pair of golden boots.
SNHK believed the attack would illustrate his points on why tz_scion was not fit for the Speakership due to his “welfare state” policies, especially the policies of his political party, the CalvinBall Party.
tz_scion was wounded, but never killed during the attempt. As soon as SNHK began his assault, several members of the Melonian Legion immediately began their pursuit of SNHK, including President Michael Webb. President Webb would eventually be the one to capture SNHK by killing him around Beaker Street in Downtown a few minutes after the main event took place.
In his trial, Republic of Melonia v. SNHK, he pleaded guilty to all 5 charges (10 total counts), including Terrorism, Treason, Griefing, and Battery (6 counts) in court. The judge in this case, CalvinX, sentenced SNHK to a 1 month ban and ordered him to pay the Republic a 7,000 melit fine, per the prosecution’s recommendation.
Background
The February 15, 2023 election cycle is widely regarded as one of the most contentious Melonian elections in its history thus far, with candidates going up against each other in major positions with very differing views. Two new political parties had formed; the CalvinBall Party, which believes in making a new player’s experience better by providing them with governmental assistance, and the Melonia Reborn party, which was known for its aggressive campaigning and its controversial poster calling the CalvinBall Party a “welfare party”.
In this tough political climate, the Speakership debate of February 8, 2023 came to be. This was a debate hosted by MBC and the Committee for Debates that placed the Melonian Representative Party (MRP) candidate for Speaker of Parliament, lainuel, against the CalvinBall Party (CBP) candidate, tz_scion. This debate was seen as significant because whoever became Speaker would have a fairly significant amount of power over the Parliament due to having the power of a tie-breaking vote, and their ability to enforce Parliament rules.
With this in mind, SNHK was motivated to attempt to intimidate tz_scion to drop out of the race due to his strong disagreements with the CalvinBall Party’s “welfare state” policies. As far as it is currently known, SNHK acted alone without any outside help, although SNHK did admit in a post-arrest interview with President Webb that he was partially inspired by the Melonia Reborn party’s campaign posters.
Main Event (February 8, 2023)
On February 8, 2023, at approximately 8:15 PM Central Standard Time, SNHK dug underneath the Parliament Hall of the House of the Republic, came up from the floor, and began hitting tz_scion with a pair of golden boots as the weapon.
As soon as SNHK began his attack, Melonian Legion soldiers that were present at the debate immediately swooped in to save the at-the-time Prime Minister. This resulted in SNHK attempting to escape the Legion by running towards the dock near Main Street in Downtown. However, the Legion eventually caught up to him, and a few minutes later, President Michael Webb dealt the final blow to SNHK, taking him out and officially arresting him.
Scion survived this attack, but out of an abundance of caution, President Webb immediately raised the Republic’s Defense Readiness Index (DRI) to DRI 2, meaning the Legion would be readily prepared with resources to defend the Republic against any attack at any point in time, and Legion soldiers would have the ability to kill or detain any trying to commit acts of terrorism or treason.
Resolution
Immediately after SNHK was arrested, the Melonian government voted unanimously to kick SNHK out of his Member of Parliament seat. SNHK was also President Webb’s Prime Ministerial candidate before the events of February 8, but Webb immediately removed him as his candidate and eventually chose Minister of Science awedball instead to be his Prime Ministerial candidate.
Charges were later formally filed against SNHK in the criminal case “CRIM-1”: Republic of Melonia v. SNHK. SNHK pleaded guilty to all 10 counts charged against him by the Republic, including 1 count of Terrorism (for using violence and intimidation for political goals), 1 count of Treason (for harming government officials and damaging the House of the Republic), 1 count of Griefing (for causing damage to the House of the Republic), 1 count of Disorderly Conduct (for being unreasonably disruptive and violent), and 6 counts of Battery (for damage to Scion that many times). The judge in this case, Calvin, sentenced him to a 1 month ban from the Republic of Melonia and ordered him to pay the Republic a 7,000 melit fine in damages.
Eventually, tz_scion would go on to just barely beat incumbent Speaker lainuel to take the Speakership, which he has held ever since. Webb ended up winning re-election with his new running mate awedball, and the pair have been the Presidential/Prime Ministerial duo since then.
